What Is Tonsillitis? A Pediatrician’s Guide for Parents

Tonsillitis is a common condition in children that causes inflammation and swelling of the tonsils, often leading to sore throats, fever, and difficulty swallowing. While most cases resolve with proper care, understanding what causes tonsillitis and when to seek medical attention is essential for keeping your child healthy. At Hummingbird Pediatrics, serving families in Houston, Baytown, and the Greater Greenspoint area, our pediatric team provides expert diagnosis and treatment for tonsillitis and other childhood illnesses.

What Causes Tonsillitis

The tonsils are small, oval-shaped pieces of tissue at the back of the throat that help combat infection by trapping bacteria and viruses. When these tissues become inflamed themselves, it is called tonsillitis. It can be viral, such as the common cold or flu, or bacterial, most commonly Streptococcus (or strep throat).

Common Symptoms

Tonsillitis can vary in severity, but common symptoms include a sore throat, red or swollen tonsils, white or yellow patches on the tonsils, fever, enlarged glands in the neck, and difficulty swallowing. Infants and younger children may also drool more than usual or refuse to eat because of throat discomfort.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Your provider can diagnose tonsillitis with an inspection of your child's throat and possibly a throat swab if needed to determine if the infection is bacterial or viral. Viral tonsillitis generally resolves with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain medication. If the cause is bacterial, antibiotics are prescribed to clear the infection and prevent complications.

If your child experiences chronic or recurrent tonsillitis, your pediatrician may refer your child to an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist to discuss other options, including a possible tonsillectomy to remove the tonsils.

Preventing Tonsillitis

While not all cases can be prevented, good hygiene can reduce your child’s risk. Encourage regular handwashing, teach your child not to share utensils or drinks, and keep them home when sick to avoid spreading infection.
